Peer Coach wins NCCE Award for Tech Teacher of the Year

Mount Vernon, Washington, teacher and peer coach Martha Thornburgh won the NCCE award for Tech Teacher of the Year. Martha helped her district get Enhancing Education through Technology grant funding, which uses the PSCTLT Peer Coaching Program.

Virtual World Research, Part 1: Place to Experiment

Scientists and other researchers have found an appealing environment in virtual worlds such as World of Warcraft and Second Life. The draw of these virtual worlds for scientists is that they can conduct experiments whose results are similar to the real world without the expense of travel and physical construction. New Washington educational technology standards are now available online. The new standards require that students use technology within all content areas to collaborate, communicate, generate innovative ideas, investigate and solve problems.

TechREACH has extended its reach by marketing training and curriculum to Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP). Last summer, TechREACH offered fee-for-service training and curriculum to instructors from five rural communities on digital photography, animation, and/or 3-D modeling.

TechREACH Alliance Project Web Site Now Available

The TechREACH Alliance Project (TAP) is a partnership between the PSCTLT, Wilderness Technology Alliance, and the TEConnections program to increase technology access and literacy in underserved communities located in Eastern and Western Washington. TAP will provide technology literacy training and a refurbished computer with Internet access to people from low-income households via established partnerships with schools, DSHS, community colleges, and/or community centers.

PSCTLT was selected again as a winner of the 2008 Alfred P. Sloan Awards for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility! The award recognizes employers that are successfully using workplace flexibility to meet both employer and employee goals. As a winner, PSCTLT ranks in the top 20 percent of employers nationally in terms of flexible work programs, policies and culture. All of the Alfred P Sloan Award winners from across the country will be recognized in a full-page ad in USA Today later this year.

Last week, Karen Manuel was in Pasco training parents how to use the Internet on the refurbished computers the TechREACH students received in December. Reporters from KNDU TV and the Tri-Cities Herald attended the session and a story appeared in the local paper.
