Dogwood GEMS Club Attends USA Science and Engineering Festival

Thanks to a grant from the National Girls Collaborative Project urban school children from Reston, Virginia were able to attend the USA Science & Engineering Festival in Washington, DC. Fifty girls in grades 3 - 6 who are members of Dogwood Elementary's GEMS Club (Girls Excelling in Math and Science) packed a lunch and headed for the festival.

At the festival the girls experienced many hands-on activities lead by the biggest names in science - NOAA, EPA, National Geographic, the Smithsonian, to name just a few. It was such an exciting day! The girls learned about fossils, chemistry, aeronautics, robotics and came back wanting to know more.

A dozen chaperones also attended and as parents of girls who are enthusiastic about math and science, they were able to learn more about career opportunities. When asked how Nikayla enjoyed the day, her only response was, "I'm going back tomorrow!" And she did!

SeaBots: Dive into Science, a one-week science camp for middle school girls! Campers will solve real-world scenarios in underwater discovery using LEGO Mindstorms™. They will design, build and deploy Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) to explore a coral reef, investigate a sunken ship, and collect samples from the water...y depths! Interactive hands-on activities will facilitate the understanding of computer programming concepts, basic principles of physics, and what it means to be a mechanical engineer or a computer scientist in marine research. Women scientists will visit the camp to share their stories and enthusiasm for robotics with the girls. The camp will be held at Edmonds Community College from July 12-16.

In honor of Memorial Day, the Today Show broadcast a great segment on the women pilots of WWII. This spring, Women Airforce Service Pilots were finally recognized for their service in WWII when they were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor; "No longer a missing chapter in the history of WWII, in the history of the Air Force, in the history of aviation, in the history of America."

"They learned physics, meteorology, how to build a plane engine. They flew more than a thousand hours in every model plane. Even taught the men how to fly."

New Survey Finds American Girls Express Interest in Sciences but aren’t Sure How to Get There

"WASHINGTON - (Business Wire) Faced with increasing competition across the globe, politicians, pundits and the private sector have sounded the alarm that a reinvigorated focus must be urgently applied to American STEM education (science, technology, engineering and math). Lacking that effort, many have predicted that America’s next generation will fall behind the economic and innovation curve, a scenario that could directly impact basic quality of life standards. "

Why are so few women in science and engineering fields?

In an era when women are increasingly prominent in medicine, law and business, why are so few women in science and engineering fields? A new research report by AAUW (the American Association of University Women) funded by the National Science Foundation presents compelling evidence that can help to explain this question. Why So Few? Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics presents eight recent research findings that point to important environmental and social barriers -- including stereotypes, gender bias and the climate of science and engineering departments in colleges and universities- that continue to block women’s participation and progress in science, technology, engineering, and math. Read about Why So Few? in the New York Times.

A Comprehensive Approach to Success in Education and Careers for Out-of-School Youth

"The Community Education Pathways to Success (CEPS) model targets out-of-school youth who have expressed interest in earning a GED by addressing low literacy and math skills through an integration of youth development, social supports, and career-related services. The CEPS model, in partnership with community-based organizations, supports participants through completing their education, entering college, finding working, and contributing to their communities. This forum will provide an overview of the model, discuss results from a recently released evaluation, and provide recommendations for policy. "
